The National Parks of Northeast Brazil
Northeast Brazil covers around 1.55 million km² – almost three times the size of France – yet it remains one of the country's least-visited regions for nature travel. Away from the beach resorts, it hides some of Brazil's most spectacular landscapes:
- Chapada Diamantina National Park (Bahia): table mountains, deep canyons, caves and waterfalls such as the Cachoeira da Fumaça, one of the highest in Brazil. One of the best hiking destinations in South America, with treks ranging from easy day walks to multi-day expeditions.
- Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (Maranhão): a unique landscape of white sand dunes and, during the rainy season, thousands of crystal-clear freshwater lagoons. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024, its lagoons are fullest between June and September.
- The Parnaíba River Delta (Piauí and Maranhão): a maze of more than 70 islands, mangroves and dunes where the Parnaíba River meets the Atlantic, home to scarlet ibises and other wildlife.
