The Amazon rainforest is gigantic: covering over 6 million km² – about two-thirds the size of the United States – it spans Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Brazil. The Brazilian part, known as the "Amazônia Legal", covers 5 million km² – 60% of the total area, while the remaining 40% lies in the other countries mentioned. This makes the Brazilian Amazon about 9 times larger than France. It occupies 61% of Brazil's total area of 8.5 million km², encompassing 7 federal states entirely and 4 more partially. However, it is home to only 12.3% of Brazil's population.

The Amazon Basin is the largest freshwater reservoir on earth, and its rivers carry about one-fifth of all the river water flowing into the world's oceans. The Amazon River itself is 6,668 km long – roughly the distance from Berlin to New York. More than 2,500 fish species live in its rivers – several times more than in all of Europe's rivers combined. The rainforest hosts around 400 species of mammals and 1,300 species of birds. Researchers have identified 200 species of trees on a single hectare, with 72 species of ants living on and in just one of these trees.
